We help to facilitate the following
four program in conjunction with the Departments
of Medicine, Neurology, and Psychiatry at the Addis Ababa University
in Ethiopia's capital city.
Program in Psychiatry
We are doing whatever we can to help the
Department of Psychiatry create a psychiatric residency program.
Despite the official approval and the willingness of the faculty
to undertake such a program, it cannot be started unless funds
are raised for books, journals, stationery, furniture, Internet
access and a computer, treatment room remodeling, and travel
and training expenses for psychiatric nurses, already providing
limited care throughout Ethiopia.
The program seeks to train 4-6 psychiatric
residents per year over a three-year period. Staff Psychiatrist
and Professor Dr. Atalay Alem of the Addis Ababa University is
working with us on this project under the direction of the Dr.
Abdulreshid Abdullahi, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry.
Training Program in Medicine and Neurology
In the Departments of Medicine and Neurology,
there is an important need to improve training of staff, residents,
and medical students by providing educational materials and opportunities,
video course material, and medical equipment. In addition, many
medical students and doctors-in-training are in need of sufficient
food, housing, and healthcare. Chairman of Neurology Dr. Guta
Zenebe is working with us on this project.
Visiting Professorship Program
Along with the above programs, we help
facilitate a one to two week long "Visiting Professor Program,"
sending neurologists and / or psychiatrists to Ethiopia.
Rotations for residents and medical
students
Residents, depending upon their speciality
and training, and medical students are placed at Ethiopia's largest
teaching hospital, the Black Lion Hospital, in Addis Ababa. Opportunities
for a more rural healthcare experience can sometimes be accomodated.
Information
By bringing these programs to reality,
we will benefit the people of Ethiopia needing medical, neurologic,
and psychiatric care by expanding the number, quality, and accessibility
of physicians and medical students.

governmental approval, the initiative has the support of the
Ethiopian Community Association of Greater Philadelphia that
represents over 5000 Ethiopians in the Delaware Valley. The Medical
Initiative for Ethiopia was featured in the November, 2000 issue
of the American Academy of Neurology News.
